Alexandros Georgiou, Untitled (II), 2004, photograph c-print in aluminum, 50x70cm

Alexandros Georgiou presents at the ground floor of the gallery, a selection of his early photographic works from the series Cut Outs (1999–2004) and Without My Own Vehicle (2005–2017).

The Cut Outs series consists of self-portraits photographed from a television screen, depicting the artist within oversized everyday environments. Created during a formative period of his life, these works express the loneliness and existential vertigo he experienced as a young gay man navigating a world that often felt unwelcoming and alienating.

Following this project, Georgiou embarked on a series of journeys/ art projects called “Without my own vehicle”, traveling with buses and trains, primarily through Iran and India, as well as Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Along the way, he handcrafted postcards and produced colored xerox prints of his photographs, which he sent—together with poetry, music, and personal reflections—to a selected group of recipients. These individuals became virtual participants in his travels: some were collectors who supported the project, while others were close friends.

As both artist and wanderer, Georgiou approached travel as a deeply personal and immersive practice, one that revealed an ongoing search for meaning, connection, and self-understanding.

The exhibition is part of the APhF:26 Satellite Program, curated by Sylvia Sachini, within the Athens Photo Festival 2026.

Alexandros Georgiou

Georgiou (b. 1972) first became known for his travel-based works created in Iran and India, where both friends and strangers received artworks he produced during his journeys through post— mainly handmade cards and overpainted black-and-white photocopies of photographs he had taken. Following the birth of his son in 2017, these travel works gradually gave way to painting, continuing his early engagement with the medium.Born in Athens, he graduated from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1996 and continued his studies at the School of Visual Arts. Working through photography and painting, his practice focuses on the exploration of personal and spiritual quests, movement and travel, and the relationship with oneself and others.

Among his notable solo exhibitions are: The Workshop at the café of the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) as part of the exhibition Why Look At Animals? (2025–2026); From the Perspective of Yes (2023); The Prince with the Blue Crown Meets the Family Within His Body (2021) at Rebecca Camhi Gallery; Three Continents, Three Friends (2023) at the Municipal Gallery of Athens; Empress and Spirits (2022) at Zina Athanasiadou Gallery; metaGods (2017) at the Benaki Museum Museum of Islamic Art; and Without My Own Vehicle I–V (2012) at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens.
